Compare Tiffen UV filters in 77mm, 62mm, and 30.5mm sizes for lens protection and UV control. Find the right fit for your camera lens based on diameter, UV absorption, and budget.
Quick answer
Choose the Tiffen UV filter size that matches your lens thread diameter: 77mm for large lenses, 62mm for mid-range, and 30.5mm for compact cameras. The UV Haze 1 offers the strongest UV reduction, while the standard UV is the most budget-friendly protection.
Size matters: matching filter to lens thread
The most important factor when picking a UV filter is getting the correct diameter for your lens. A 77mm filter fits large professional zooms, a 62mm fits standard kit lenses, and a 30.5mm fits small point-and-shoot or camcorder threads. Using the wrong size either won't screw on or will cause vignetting.
UV absorption levels: not all filters are equal
Tiffen UV filters vary in how much UV light they block. The 30.5mm UV Haze 1 absorbs nearly three-quarters of UV light, making it ideal for reducing haze in landscapes. The 62mm UV 17 absorbs slightly less UV than a Haze 2A, offering a middle ground for photographers who want UV control without full blockage. The 77mm UV filter provides basic UV reduction, enough to eliminate bluish casts in most daylight scenes.
Price vs. protection: balancing cost and features
The 77mm UV filter costs just over $11, making it an affordable lens protector you can leave on your camera. The 62mm UV 17 is priced around $802, reflecting its specialized UV absorption and warm tone. The 30.5mm UV Haze 1 is also expensive at $864, justified by its superior haze reduction for critical work. Decide whether you need advanced UV control or simple scratch protection.
Trade-offs at a glance
- 30.5mm UV Haze 1: Strongest UV absorption (blocks ~75% of UV). Best for haze reduction in landscapes or high-altitude shooting. Expensive at ~$864. Use only if you regularly shoot in hazy conditions and need maximum UV control.
- 62mm UV 17: Moderate UV absorption with a warm tone. Good for general UV control without full blockage. Priced around $802. Consider if you want UV protection plus a slight warming effect for portraits or film emulation.
- 77mm UV: Basic UV reduction and lens protection. Most affordable at ~$11. Ideal for everyday use on large lenses. Best for photographers who want a cheap, permanent lens protector and minimal UV correction.
